Learner Spotlight – Viktoria Jorayeva

Meet Viktoria Jorayeva, a Ukrainian student who made the transition from philology to data science in just a few months with Dataquest. As a person from a non-technical, non-mathematical background, breaking into the field of data science was possible thanks to Dataquest’s data science career path.

Her story is a true inspiration to learners around the world who dream about landing the “sexiest job of the 21st century.” By sharing Viktoria’s experience, we hope that learners from non-traditional paths who are struggling to make the switch will find the motivation they need to start their data science journey.

Here’s her story:

Q. First, what are your preferred pronouns?

Q. What’s your current job title? At which company?

I’m a junior data scientist in Fractal Analytics.

Q. Can you also tell us a little about the work you do at your current job?

I have been working for almost two months. I write pseudo-codes for business requirements, documents of projects, and solution architecture diagrams.

Q. Now can you tell us a little about your background?

I am from Ukraine (Kyiv). In fact, by education, I am a philologist (Persian language), and I hadn’t had a mathematical background at all. But Dataquest helped me make my dream come true even without technical education. I found this super-awesome resource. This is the best I’ve tried (I tried five courses). At Dataquest, I chose the “Data Scientist” path and started to learn Python and SQL, data analytics, and visualization, and before I could get to machine learning, I was offered a job.

Q. What made you get into the data industry?

I wanted to do something progressive, scientific. While I was studying to be a translator, I realized that online translators also “studied” with me, bringing machine translation to perfection. So, I needed to choose a more modern profession.

Q. How did Dataquest’s teaching methodology (no-video, in-browser coding) work for you?

Perfect for me. The lack of video content saves time. The text is written in the most understandable and accessible way. But what I liked the most was the practice on every slide! You read, and immediately you consolidate your knowledge with a small practical task.

Q. Which path(/s) did you do at Dataquest and why?

Data scientist. It is one of the most progressive and well-paid professions at the moment.

Q. What were your favorite Guided Projects, and how did they help you in your job search?

I liked all the projects, as they gave new knowledge and consolidated what I learned. It’s also just a pleasure for me to work in Jupyter 🙂

Q. Now can you tell us the story of how you went about the job search process?

My friend found a vacancy on https://dou.ua/ and shared it with me. It is the main Ukrainian IT job resource.

Q. What are some of the skills you learned at Dataquest that help you at your job?

Python, SQL, data analysis, data visualization, statistics

Q. What’s your favorite thing about Dataquest and why?

How easily and clearly such complex material is presented. Things like statistics and programming are not easy to learn. But Dataquest explains them more clearly than all other resources. That is, it is understandable even for a person without specialized education.

Q. What advice would you give to Dataquest learners who are just starting out?

There is nothing in the whole world that you cannot learn! In short, everything is simple — you take around three hours to study every day, and voila — you get your dream job. I studied on Dataquest for only four months, and then the company took me for an internship. You just need diligence; Dataquest has already done everything else for you.

Q. Finally, where can people find you on the Internet
